The Project
Industrial Visual Alignment System at St. Mary’s Cement
Client: St. Mary’s Cement
Region: Bowmanville, Ontario
Date Completed: June 2023
Cost: $48,000
Impact:95% Reduction in Concrete Misdrops
St. Mary’s Cement in Bowmanville, Ontario, partnered with Uplynk to solve a critical communication issue affecting their shipping operations. The result was a rugged, site-wide visual control system powered by industrial mesh WiFi—delivering clarity, accuracy, and a massive reduction in operational waste.
Introduction

Smart Technology Prevents Expensive Mistakes in High-Noise Environments
When St. Mary’s Cement in Bowmanville, Ontario approached Uplynk, they weren’t just looking for better WiFi—they were searching for a way to fix a costly problem in their shipping operations.
In a loud, industrial setting filled with machinery, concrete silos, and moving trucks, their team faced repeated communication breakdowns between vehicle operators and control room staff. The result? Misaligned concrete drops, blocked rail lines, and damaged infrastructure.
We helped them eliminate the guesswork with a real-time visual control system powered by an industrial-grade mesh WiFi network—custom-built to perform in even the harshest environments.
video Introduction
The Problem
When a Few Inches Can Cost Thousands
At St. Mary’s, dry cement is dispensed into trucks or rail cars from tall silos. The process requires perfect alignment under pressurized spouts—just a few inches off can lead to spilled concrete.
And if it’s raining? That concrete hardens fast, blocking rail lines, damaging loading bays, and creating hours of clean-up and lost productivity.
Their alignment process relied on radio communication between the truck or Rail King operator and the control office. But in a setting filled with industrial noise, signals were often missed or misunderstood. Concrete misdrops became a regular—and expensive—occurrence.
The Original Plan
Loudspeakers and Microphones
The team at St. Mary’s originally considered installing a network of microphones and loudspeakers to shout instructions back and forth.
But that didn’t solve the root issue: the lack of clear, synchronized visibility between both parties.
The Uplynk Solution - Industrial Wireless Communication Solutions
A Smarter, Visual Approach
We proposed a smarter solution—eliminate the reliance on audio communication altogether. Instead, make the alignment process visual, real-time, and shared.
Here’s what we installed:
- Outdoor-rated cameras at each spout to capture a clear view of the alignment zone
- Industrial-grade displays positioned at driver sightlines to show the camera feed
- Control room monitors for operators to view the same feed before dispensing
- Ruggedized tablets installed in Rail King vehicles, wirelessly connected to the system
- A high-performance outdoor mesh WiFi network to ensure seamless connectivity across the site
With this setup, drivers and operators were looking at the same thing at the same time, eliminating the need for complicated voice instructions and guesswork.
The Result
95% Fewer Misdrops, Less Stress, and Faster Workflow
Within weeks of implementation, the results were clear:
- 95% reduction in concrete misdrops
- Faster, smoother loading operations
- Significant reduction in operator stress
- The remaining 5% of issues? Human error—not tech failure
This transformation proved that with the right industrial networking solution, even long-standing problems can be solved—with smarter systems, not louder voices.
Takeaway

Technology That Works for You—Not Against You
This project highlights a simple truth: industrial environments need purpose-built solutions. What works in an office or home doesn’t cut it in a cement plant.
At Uplynk, we specialize in industrial WiFi and smart control systems that bring clarity, efficiency, and peace of mind to even the most rugged sites.
