Home Network Installation: Wiring & Wi-Fi Setup for a New or Renovated Home

Most homes still run on whatever network setup came with a single router plugged in wherever the internet line happens to enter the house — which is rarely the ideal location for actually distributing a strong connection everywhere it’s needed. A proper home network installation fixes this at the source, and it’s a much bigger opportunity during new construction or a major renovation, when walls are already open.

Why Network Planning Matters More Than People Expect

Every smart device, streaming service, security camera, and work-from-home setup in a modern household depends on network reliability. A weak or poorly planned network doesn’t just mean slow Wi-Fi in one room — it means dropped video calls, security cameras that lose connection at the worst moment, and smart home devices that become unreliable enough that people stop trusting them.

Structured Wiring: The Foundation Most Homes Skip

Structured wiring means running actual Ethernet cable to key locations throughout the home — not relying entirely on Wi-Fi to reach every device. This matters most for:

  • Mesh Wi-Fi node backhaul. Wired connections between mesh nodes (rather than wireless-only mesh) deliver significantly more reliable whole-home coverage.
  • Stationary high-bandwidth devices — smart TVs, gaming consoles, home theatre equipment, desktop computers — perform better and more reliably on a wired connection than fighting for Wi-Fi bandwidth.
  • Security system components, which benefit from a stable wired connection rather than depending entirely on Wi-Fi uptime.

New builds and major renovations are the ideal time for this, since running cable through open walls is far simpler (and cheaper) than fishing it through finished walls afterward.

Planning Wi-Fi Coverage Properly

Even with good structured wiring, most devices in a home still connect via Wi-Fi — phones, tablets, laptops, and most smart home devices. Proper Wi-Fi planning means:

  • Mapping actual coverage needs room by room, not assuming a single router placed anywhere will reach everywhere
  • Accounting for building materials — brick, concrete, and certain insulation types degrade Wi-Fi signal more than standard drywall
  • Planning for device density — a home office with multiple devices, a media room with several streaming devices, and a smart home hub location all benefit from being near strong coverage rather than at the edge of it

New Build / Renovation vs. Retrofit

During construction or major renovation: This is the cheapest and most effective time to install structured wiring, since cable runs go in before walls are closed. A network installer working alongside your electrician at this stage can plan cable drops to every room that might eventually need one — even if you don’t have a device for it yet.

Retrofitting an existing home: Still possible, but typically more limited to key locations (attic, basement, main living areas) rather than every room, since running new cable through finished walls is more invasive and costly. A mesh Wi-Fi network with wireless backhaul is often the practical compromise for retrofits where full structured wiring isn’t feasible.

What It Costs

  • Structured wiring during new construction (per drop): $75–$150 per cable run, significantly cheaper than retrofitting
  • Retrofitting structured wiring to key rooms: $150–$350 per cable run in an existing home
  • Professional Wi-Fi mesh network setup: $500–$2,000 depending on home size and node count
  • Full network installation for a new build (structured wiring + Wi-Fi + network equipment): typically $2,000–$8,000+ depending on home size and scope

Planning Ahead, Even If You’re Not Building Yet

If you’re planning a renovation, even a partial one, it’s worth having a network installer walk through before walls close — the cost difference between planning cable runs now versus retrofitting later is significant, and it’s a decision that’s hard to undo once drywall goes up.
