Blinds pricing gets confusing fast because “blinds” covers everything from a basic manual set to fully motorized, app-controlled shades integrated into a whole-home system. Here’s how the pricing actually breaks down.
Manual vs. Motorized: The Core Cost Difference
Manual blinds are the lower-cost option and a straightforward install — cost scales mostly with window size, count, and material (aluminum, faux wood, real wood, fabric roller shades). Motorized blinds cost more upfront because you’re paying for the motor, the control system, and — if you want it — integration with your existing smart home setup so shades respond to a schedule, sunlight, or voice command rather than requiring a physical pull.
What Actually Drives the Price
- Window size and count. The most straightforward factor — larger windows and more of them mean more material and labour.
- Blind type and material. Roller shades, cellular shades, wood blinds, and roman shades all carry different material costs before motorization even enters the picture.
- Motorization. Battery-powered motorized blinds are simpler to retrofit into an existing home; hardwired motorized systems cost more to install but avoid battery maintenance long-term.
- Smart integration. Tying motorized blinds into a broader smart home platform (scheduling, voice control, “away mode” automation) adds setup cost but is often a small addition on top of motorization itself, since the wiring work is already being done.
- Custom vs. standard sizing. Non-standard window shapes or oversized windows typically require custom fabrication, which costs more than off-the-shelf sizing.
Manual, Battery-Motorized, or Hardwired — Which Fits Your Home?
- Manual — best for budget-conscious projects or rooms where automation isn’t a priority.
- Battery-motorized — the easiest retrofit for an existing home; no new wiring required, though batteries need periodic recharging or replacement.
- Hardwired motorized — the most seamless long-term option, best planned during a renovation or new build when wiring is easier to run.
Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Is the quote for manual or motorized blinds — and is that clear in writing?
- If motorized, is it battery or hardwired, and what’s the expected battery life if applicable?
- Can the system integrate with our existing smart home setup, or does it require its own separate app?
- What’s the warranty on the motor versus the blind material itself?
- Are custom sizes quoted separately, or included in the initial estimate?
Getting an Accurate Quote
Because so much of the final price depends on window count, size, and the manual-vs-motorized decision, a generic “per window” number from a website is rarely accurate for your actual home. A proper assessment measures your specific windows and talks through which rooms actually benefit from motorization (bedrooms and hard-to-reach windows, typically) versus where manual blinds are perfectly fine.
What Uplynk Installs
We install both manual and motorized smart blinds across Ontario, and — because it’s part of what we do across every project — we can integrate motorized shades directly into your existing smart home platform rather than leaving them as a standalone app. See our smart blinds installation service for details.
