Introduction
The Coats Rd Alexa Smart Home in Oshawa, Ontario, showcases an impressive fusion of smart home technology, winning the prestigious 2021 Cedia Pro Smart Home of the Year award. With a budget of $75,000, Uplynk collaborated with Jeffery Homes to create a fully integrated, voice-controlled home ecosystem using Amazon Alexa.
Despite challenges like COVID-19 delays and limited product availability in Canada, Uplynk delivered a cutting-edge, easy-to-use smart home tailored for comfort, security, and entertainment.
Consultation
When the owners approached Uplynk, they were eager to incorporate smart home technology but needed to decide which system to choose. They wanted a professionally installed setup that was easy to use for their family of five. the owner had attempted DIY installations but realized he needed expert integration for a seamless experience. The goal was to create a functional, family-friendly home that centralized control into a single ecosystem.
Design
Uplynk crafted a smart home ecosystem for the family that emphasized ease of use, functionality, and seamless integration. The Alexa-based system provided centralized voice control for various aspects of the home, making everyday tasks more efficient and enjoyable. Below are the key features that make this project stand out:
Network
A commercial-grade mesh network with 4 access points provided simultaneous connections to up to 100 devices throughout the whole home. Internet connections were also provided at key entertaining areas, including all TVs and the home theater. This provided buffer-free streaming, lag-free gaming, and reduced demand on the wireless network.
The network was fully manageable by the customer with a personalized firewall, VPN, and WPA3 security.
Security
A full Ring security system was installed, complete with smart locks and access control for the garage doors, ensuring the family’s safety and peace of mind. We used stick up cam elites, ring alarm pro and schlage encode locks that are all able to sync within the Alexa app.
Multi-Zone Temperature Control
Separate Ecobee thermostat zones were created for the main floor and basement, allowing customized climate control throughout the home.
Lighting and Smart Devices
Voice-controlled lighting was integrated throughout the house, enhancing convenience and energy efficiency while providing a modern aesthetic.
Audio System
The great room was equipped with a Sonos Arc soundbar, the Sonos sub Gen3 and rear channel speakers, creating an immersive audio environment for everyday entertainment. The great room was a large space, and the audio sounded amazing.
Home Theatre System
The basement was transformed into a home theatre, featuring high-quality audio and video, designed to deliver a cinematic experience.
Outdoor Entertainment
An outdoor weatherproof TV area with in-ceiling speakers was set up on the deck to provide a “sports bar” atmosphere, perfect for family gatherings and casual entertainment. The client loved golf, so he wanted to be able to watch Golf TV from anywhere in the home
Integration
All the different smart home products were carefully selected to ensure they could integrate within one ecosystem. The Alexa ecosystem was chosen because of a few factors. The client was already familiar with Alexa, and the number of devices they wanted could fit within the ecosystem. The Alexa system was a better fit for their budget.
Eco-Friendly Design
The house is Energy Star Certified, and as part of the project, Uplynk contributed to planting 221 trees to offset the construction’s environmental impact.
Installation
Uplynk worked closely with Jeffery Homes to ensure that every smart feature was seamlessly integrated into the home’s construction. One significant challenge was operating during the COVID-19 pandemic, which required adapting to shifting timelines. Despite these obstacles, the project remained on track through constant communication and prioritization.
All devices were carefully installed to ensure a clean, cable-free appearance, maintaining the home’s modern aesthetics while delivering state-of-the-art functionality.
